Shocking moment lorry overturns going around roundabout
Shocked motorists captured the incredible moment a meat lorry was left dangling above a dual carriageway after overturning on a roundabout.
Petru-ionut Lungu, 33, tipped over after putting his foot down to try and beat a red light as he made his way around the Copdock roundabout linking the A12 and A14 in Ipswich.
Motorists following behind the lorry captured the vehicle toppling onto its side before coming to rest up against barriers overlooking the A14 as debris rained down onto passing cars below.
Nobody was seriously hurt in the crash, but it held up thousands of Rod Stewart fans battling the evening rush hour traffic on their way to a gig at Ipswich Town’s Portman Road ground on June 7 last year.
Suffolk Magistrates’ Court heard Lungu, from Felixstowe, overturned after accelerating away from traffic lights which were ‘on amber, if not red’.
He admitted careless driving at an earlier hearing and was banned from driving for six months, fined £562 and ordered to pay £85 costs as well as a £56 surcharge.
Magistrates, who viewed the dashcam footage, dismissed his pleas to keep his licence after he claimed losing it would leave his family unable to pay the bills.
Sergeant Peter Partridge, of the Norfolk and Suffolk Roads and Armed Policing Team, said they were ‘delighted with this result’.
He added: ‘Careless driving has serious consequences and will not be tolerated.
‘Suffolk Police will continue to pursue and prosecute those who drive carelessly and endanger the lives of other road users.’
